Ladies, rejoice! We’ve put together a collection of great ponytail hairstyles that will show just how versatile this seemingly simple style really is!
After all, did you know that you can actually tie your hair into a ponytail no matter its length or texture? Also, the simple pony doesn’t have to be simple: it can be just as complex and intricate as you want it to be.
You can also wear either a low or a high, a low-slung or a side ponytail, and generally, one of the many different styles that we’ve presented below!
I. Ponytails by Hair Length & Hair Type
1. Short Ponytail Hairstyles
As we’ve mentioned at the beginnning of this article, you can actually gather your hair into a pony even if you are sporting a short haircut. Still, this can only be done beginnning with a short bob type of style, and the ponytail will be really small, to begin with.
2. Ponytail Hairstyles For Short Hair
Once the hair is well past year level and more towards chin-length, the door to the various types of ponytails will open up mode definitely than before. Take this low pony, for example. It was made at nape-level and the choppy ends and loose tresses reflect the still short nature of the hair.
3. Easy Ponytail Hairstyles For Medium Length Hair
Short to medium-length hair can be styled in a variety of ways, but we choose this pony up sort of updo – partly thanks to the very useful tutorial that goes to show just how easy it is to make – and how fabulous it looks!
4. Ponytail Hairstyles For Long Hair
Not all ladies will grow out their hair so long – there are probably few that actually do so naturally. Nonetheless, let’s admire the beautifully long and full ponytail that is made almost on top of the head – talk about Rapunzel tresses!
5. Straight Black Sleek Ponytail Hairstyles
Another very long ponytail that was also actually made on top of the head but one that is likely a weave. However that might be, it looks simply stunning – partly thanks to the styling, partly thanks to its straightness and sleekness.
6. Ponytail Hairstyles For Black Hair
Ladies with African-American hair can easily play up their natural texture by partly changing it. Take this pony style as an example of a half straight look. While the locks on the crown of the head were straightened, the ponytail was left wild and curly.
7. Weave Ponytail Hairstyles
We’ve mentioned them a bit above, now prepared to be amazed by their versatility! There are so many great weave hairstyles that for this example, we chose a twisted weave ponytail – it got us hooked.
8. Sleek Ponytail Styles With Weave
Similarly straightened, but so differently styled. Just like #5, this is a straight weave ponytail, but one made at the nape of the neck and styled to end in an almost corkscrew-like design.
9. Weave Ponytail With Bangs Hairstyles
This weave and ponytail look is made complete and all the prettier by the full side bangs that actually cover part of the face. They make for an alluring and mysterious hairstyle.
10. Curly Ponytail Hairstyles For Black Hair
Consider adding a weave – or just let your curls run natural and beautiful! Take this gorgeous look as an example of how good a simple, high ponytail can look on curly hair that was just slightly styled.
11. Ponytail Hairstyles For Natural Hair
Just as stunning – or even more so – is this pic in which the natural hair and its beauty shines through as the curls are free of product and falling messily from the high to pony. The frontal curly bangs go to complete this relaxed style – perfect for a day out or a lazy day.
12. Straight Ponytail Hairstyles
So far, we’ve shown ponytails for slightly wavy and curly and African-American hair. But they can look just as spectacular and even more on naturally perfect straight hair. The low pony on shoulder-length hair is made all the prettier by the hair scarf accessory.
13. Curly Ponytail Hairstyles
This curly ponytail is neither a weave nor perfectly naturally curly. However, it is well worth the hour(s) spent styling as the high pony and the curls are made all the prettier by the face-framing tresses and the blonde highlights.
II. Ponytails for Every Age and Occasion
14. Little Girl Ponytail Hairstyles
There’s still an association between ponytails and little girls, but we can bet no one thinks of this when saying little girl ponytails. The locks were separated in two and then twisted into a heart shape before ending in two ponies on each side of the head.
15. Braided Pony Hairstyles For Kids
Another great ponytail hairstyle for kids is this very pretty braided look. The locks on the crown of the head were braided in a crown braid-like shape before being reunited in a ponytail.
16. Ponytail Hairstyles For Girls
This is yet another example of a crown braid-like pony, this time around, one more fit for older girls. It is also a great style even for the more athletic gal as it will surely attract just as much attention on and off the playing field.
17. Ponytail Hairstyles For School
We’ve already discussed in large about the best and easiest hairstyles for school, but here is another great idea. For days when you really are in a rush, just throw on a baggy, cozy sweater and then gather up your hair in a low and loose ponytail and add a hair scarf for a touch of elegance.
18. Ponytail Prom Hairstyles
We couldn’t touch on the subject of ponytails for school without also mentioning a style that would look great for prom night. Admire above a high and long ponytail with curled tips, a voluminous top, and a hair tie hidden away by a band of hair.
19. Wedding Ponytail Hairstyles
Similarly, here is a boho-inspired look that will work great for both casual everyday wear as well as for the big day. The ponytail starts and is enveloped by a beautifully made braid that hides away the hair tie and adds volume and elegance to the whole look.
20. Formal Ponytail Hairstyles
We are not sure what to point out and discuss first: the voluminous and wavy ponytail or the hair color job. Likely the latter as we simply love how the ombre goes from a warm milk chocolate on the crown to a warm blonde at the tips with a visit through the caramel middle.
21. Simple Ponytail Hairstyles For Everday Wear
Another tutorial, another great way to style a ponytail – a double one, with a twist. No one might initially realize that this full pony is actually a very smart half-up in which both the upper and the lower sections of the hair were gathered in ponytails. The upper one falls to beautifully cover and makes the lower one seem bigger and thicker.
22. Celebrity Hairstyles – The Blake Lively
It is so very hard to pick just one look from the myriad of celebrity hairstyles that grace our screens every day, but for this pony look, we settled on Blake Lively’s messy ponytail. After all, it was pretty enough to make an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival and impress everyone there.
III. All Ponytails Love
23. Low Ponytail Hairstyles
We’ve been talking about high and low and medium ponies, so now, we are here with examples for all the different ways in which you can gather a ponytail. The first one is, of course, a low ponytail made at neck level and tied with a simple but oh so chic black ribbon.
24. High Ponytail Hairstyles
Next up we have, as expected, the high ponytail. This is usually made on the top of the crown, but depending on the style of the wearer, or the moment it was made, it can go as high as the middle of the head. This styled messy look will fit any occasion – though the clothes and accessories will matter.
25. Braided Ponytail Hairstyles
This braided ponytail was just too stunning and beautiful to miss from this list. It is a ponytail made entirely out of a French braid with its tips left free. It looks excellent on the clothes too – we’d almost call it an instant winter classic, but it truly works in all seasons just as well.
26. Cute Ponytail Hairstyles – Add a Bow
The easiest way to elevate a ponytail from simple to beautiful? Add a hair accessory! Do not hesitate to add hair scarfs, ribbons, or bows. You can also use a hair scarf and style it as an exaggerated bow.
27. Low and Easy Ponytail Hairstyles
This is almost as low as you can go with your hair and still call it a ponytail. The hair is left loose and hanging for the most part before being tied in a very low, below neck pony. Loose strands of hair go to beautifully frame the face, and the blazer adds a touch of elegance to the look.
28. Ponytail Hairstyles With Bangs
We simply love bangs, and with the many types of fringes out there, it’s almost impossible not to find one that fits your face shape and style. Pair your new bangs with a wild and wavy high ponytail, and you are all good to go!
29. Two Ponytail Hairstyles
Yes, you can still wear a two ponytails hairstyle as an adult and not look as if you’re preparing for Halloween or stuck in your childhood. Just take the picture above as an example and how you can do so and look stunning!
30. Full Front Bangs And Ponytail Styles
A slicked back ponytail is also a great way to draw attention to your facial features and your bangs as well. While above we had a pair of side parted bangs, here you can admire full frontal bangs that almost fall into the eyes.

31. Braid And Ponytail Hairstyles
You’ve seen a fully braided ponytail, but that is far from the only way in which you can add braids to a pony. Take this for inspiration: braid sections on the crown of the head and gather all the resulting braids into a ponytail.
32. Cornrow Ponytail Hairstyles
There are many ways to style cornrows in updos, but keeping with the theme of this article, admire this cornrow ponytail. The braids are gathered on top of the head and a larger braid is used to tie up the braid and finish it.
33. Urban Ponytail Hairstyle
Call it urban, call it sloppy, we are definitely calling it gorgeous! It is a very relaxed pony that falls somewhere between high and medium in terms of height. The hair is loose in it, and the hair tie is hidden away by the knotted hair scarf. Strands are left free to frame the face and even the hairstyle.
34. Fake Pony Hairstyles
You have not read the name wrong – this is, in fact, a fake ponytail. How? Simple: the full and messy part of the lower ponytail is actually a hair attachment added to the shorter natural hair.
35. 2 Ponytail Hairstyles
Another way to wear two ponytails and not look like a little girl while doing is to go for two high ones. To make them more mature, the hair is strengthened, sleek, and falls on the back.
36. Long Drawstring Ponytail Hairstyles
What is a drawstring ponytail, you might ask? It is a type of hair weave made out of one of two types of hair that can be attached to your natural locks if you want to temporarily change your hair length.
37. Half Ponytail Hairstyles
We adore a good half up, half down hairstyle! After all, they can instantly make a hairstyle that truly fits your tastes and the occasion. Still, this half up pony is so pretty, that we believe it can be worn anywhere and at any time!
38. Ponytail Updo Hairstyles
This is far from being your regular ponytail or a regular updo. Instead, it is a pony updo that styles the ponytail in a sort of side-part and starts it all off from an almost French twist-like base at the nape.
39. Side Ponytail Hairstyles
For some side ponytail inspiration, just take a look above! This is not a pony fitted over the shoulder – instead, it was specifically made on the side of the head for a casual and relaxed hairstyle that works no matter the hair length.
40. Simple Ponytail Hairstyles
And here you have yet another great example of a side ponytail, this time around, made on actually wavy hair. Both the side pony and the curtain bangs help reveal the beautiful dye job as the dark brown hair ends in really light blonde tips.
41. 50s Ponytail Hairstyles
Add a touch of vintage to your look by going for a 50s-inspired ponytail! Follow the steps above to transform what would have been a simple pony into a hairstyle fit even for a pin-up shoot.
42. Box Braids Ponytail Hairstyles
Just as with cornrows, ladies that decided to go for box braids can also style them in ponytails. Also similarly to our earlier example, this is also a high pony with a covered hair tie. However, this one also draws attention to the black to blonde locks.
43. Genie Ponytail Hairstyles
The genie ponytail has a rather whimsical name and many expect it to be inspired by the look of the fictional genie (think the Aladdin one). Still, the only resemble is the very tall nature of the “hair tie” – other than that, it’s a very feminine look.
44. High and Loose Easy Ponytail Hairstyle
Sometimes, you just don’t want to do anything too complicated to your hair but still get it out of your face. Well, this is just the ponytail for such cases as while high, it looks like it might fall free at any time. But it still does its job too, and in such a pretty way too!
45. Ponytail Idea for Ultra Long Hair
We are back with another Rapunzel worthy idea. If those kids hadn’t braided her hair, this would have definitely been a great way for one of our favorite Tangled characters to tie her hair.

46. Small Half Up Pony with Hairscarf
Yet another cool example of how you can sport a half up and add a hair accessory to your hairstyle. The pony here is equal parts smaller and also a bit covered by the pretty scarf that actually adds length to it.
47. High Bubble-Style Ponytail
The bubble ponytail is a variation of the classic look and a festival favorite – and it’s easy to see why! It is very visually stunning and looks complicated while actually being very simple. You just have to be careful with those bubble sizes.
48. Braided Ponytail with Intertwined Scarf
Make a braided ponytail, weave in a scarf, and get this simply beautiful hairstyle that has a unique look and is so much itself. It’s a perfect look for sultry summer days, but can be adapted for the other seasons too.
49. French Braid into Fishtail Ponytail
There’s so much going on in here, that we will only point out the things that stand out the most and yet can be the easiest mistaken. This is, indeed, a side ponytail. Nothing new here… except the side French braid on the side of the head that goes to transform into a fishtail braid.
50. Messy Pony on Shoulder-Length Hair
We will end this list of ponytail hairstyles similarly to how we started it: with a picture of a shorter pony. Still, it is a very pretty one as it’s a great example of how well a simple, wavy, and looser ponytail can look, especially when coupled with bangs.
